In the 21st century, a globalized mining industry of large multinational corporations has arisen. Peak minerals and environmental impacts have also become a concern.

Τhe mining sector takes its own resources – and its richness – from the environment. This sector’s activities have high impacts on the surface which need to be anticipated, minimized and managed. In BAMBOO we believe that as we take what we need from the environment, then we have to give back what it needs.

In the northern part of Greece, the  Grecian Magnesite company is a pioneer in the mining sector, especially in the production of caustic calcined and dead burnt magnesia. The production process is energy intensive since it requires temperatures between 900-1900 oC, producing a large amount of unavoidable process CO2 (MgCO3 thermal decomposition) along with NOx and CO2 emissions from fossil fuels combustion. Under these conditions the production of pollutants is unavoidable, but there are innovative technologies that can help lowering the amount of emissions. Moreover, the protection of the environment is one of the highest priorities of the Grecian Magnesite as it undertakes its mining activities.

By upgrading the current kiln and partially replacing fossil fuels with high quality biomass BAMBOO foresees to:

  • reduce the dependence on fossil fuel
  • cut CO2 emissions using carbon-neutral biomass
  • cut NOx emissions by using a low-NOx burner and biomass fuel
  • allow flexible energy consumption according to the market prices
  • allow the possibility for waste heat recovery

Grecian Magnesite has long been committed to environmentally sound mining practices, focusing on maintaining the natural environment as close as possible to its pre-mining state and meeting the expectation of the community.
